Holiday at home

15/12/2020

Stay-cation and play-cation ideas for everyone these holidays.

It’s time to bring back the fun in 2021! We might not be able to travel far, but we can still explore our own back yard. Here are some cheap holiday activities that the whole family can enjoy.

1. Lost and found

Get your family and friends together and organise a scavenger hunt. Give everyone their clues and set challenges along the way for a bit of extra competition. There are lots of free templates online for you to use. At the end of the hunt, celebrate with a picnic in the park and see who has won gloating rights.

2. Become one with nature

After months of being stuck at home, get back outdoors and enjoy this amazing place we live in. There are many great nature walks for all fitness levels. Check out your local council website for the best local tracks and trails. Then lace up your joggers, grab the family and take a hike! Don’t forget to take plenty of water!

3. Backyard camping

Want the holiday vibes without the travel and the costs? Grab a tent and set it up in your own backyard. The kids will love it! Roast some marshmallows, play some tunes by the fire pit, look up at the stars, or even try to find satellites. If you don’t have a back yard, you can set up in the lounge room instead – turn off the lights and read ghost stories by torchlight!

4. Night at the movies

With many cinemas still operating under COVID restrictions, a lot of new release movies have gone straight to streaming and on-demand services. Hire a screen (or even use a white sheet) and a data projector, grab your popcorn and feel like a movie star with your very own private movie screening!

5. Travel the world without leaving the house

The international borders might be closed, but you can still travel the world by having a theme night. Pick the place you have been dreaming about for the last year. Maybe it’s Rome, Paris, or Bora Bora. Decorate your house, prepare a menu of the local cuisine and invite your friends to travel the world without the long haul flight.

6. Get crafty

Gather some friends and have an art class in your own back yard. Get your friends to bring their own canvas and drinks, then find a picture online and have your guests recreate it! Not only will you have a great time and lots of laughs, but you will get a one of a kind artwork to display in your home.

7. Hit the beach

The weather is heating up and we are lucky to have some of the best beaches around. Grab your towel, slip on your hat, slop on some sunscreen and do what Aussies do best - head to the beach. Enjoy the sun, cool off in the ocean, build a sand castle or play some beach games. Just make sure you stay safe and swim between the flags. We have proudly supported Surf Life Saving for more than 35 years and they have some great information on how to keep you and your family safe at the beach.

8. Celebrate family

It’s a great time to get the family together and have fun – whether family means a house full of cousins, reconnecting the generations or gathering your ‘chosen family’ of close friends. Celebrate just being able to spend time together and catch up on the past year. Play some board games, some backyard cricket or swim at the local pool. Enjoy the summer vibes and the time spent with each other. Bring on 2021.
