New generation Australian $10 note includes features for vision impaired

A new $10 note will be issued into circulation from Wednesday, 20 September, so our customers can expect to see them in their pockets in the not too distant future.

Monday, 4 September, 2017.

The new $10 retains the images of the two celebrated Australian writers, Dame Mary Gilmore and AB ‘Banjo’ Paterson, but in a new design that incorporates improved security features.

The work of the writers is recognised in several design elements on the note, including images of a pen nib in two of the clear windows and excerpts from their poems No Foe Shall Gather Our Harvest and The Man from Snowy River in microprint.

Newcastle Permanent CEO Terry Millett said new technology used in the $10 note, and previously released $5 note, would make it more difficult to counterfeit.

"The innovative new security features are similar to those in the $5 note issued in 2016, and include the top-to-bottom clear window and the patch with a rolling colour effect," Mr Millett said.

"Aside from the added security, a particularly exciting element of the new note series is the tactile feature to assist vision-impaired people to distinguish different notes. This is sure to improve the experience of the wider community and we’re looking forward to these notes coming into circulation."

The new note also incorporates the Bramble Wattle (Acacia victoriae) and the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) into its design. Key elements of the existing design – the predominant blue colour, its size and the two renowned Australians portrayed – have been retained to minimise confusion and disruption to business.

Each new note to follow in the series will also feature a different species of native Australian wattle and bird and similar security technology.

All notes issued by the Reserve Bank remain legal tender and so the old $10 note will be still be used as accepted currency.
