The brand new Ballina Community Men’s Shed (BCMS) was officially opened earlier this week courtesy of significant funding from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation.

A $62,000 grant from Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation enabled the construction, fit out, supply and installation of major machinery and associated equipment for the facility, which has played a significant role in supporting the health and wellbeing of the Ballina community.

Charitable Foundation Chair, Jennifer Leslie, said BCMS makes a significant difference in improving social inclusion outcomes for isolated men, especially those no longer working full-time.

“For more than a decade, BCMS has provided mateship, camaraderie, purpose and a sense of belonging for Ballina and the surrounding region. After numerous challenges over a number of years, the resilience and dedication shown by this organisation to keep pushing through to get the facility constructed, stocked and open is a tremendous achievement that deserves to be celebrated.”

“We are pleased to have supported an inclusive organisation committed to providing a relaxed and welcoming environment for men seeking connections, purpose post-retirement or assistance with projects or their own wellbeing.”

Equipment purchased courtesy of the Charitable Foundation funding includes a ducting system, wood working machinery, dust collector, ten work benches, hand tools, safety equipment and personal protective equipment.

President of the BCMS, Pat Braz, said after a tough couple of years the members are looking forward to getting to work and welcoming new members.

“We are absolutely thrilled our brand new shed is up and running and open to the community again. It’s been a challenging few years to get to this point but we honestly couldn’t be happier with the outcome and can’t thank the Charitable Foundation enough for their support. We look forward to welcoming and supporting more men from our area with their health and wellbeing.”

Present alongside members of BCMS at the opening of the new facility in Ballina was Newcastle Permanent Branch Manager for Ballina and Lismore, David Parker, the Member for Ballina, Tamara Smith MP and Mayor of Ballina, Cr David Wright.
