We're celebrating 115 years of customer-owned banking

Since 1903, we’ve provided banking services for the betterment of the communities we operate in.

Jenny Bergquist, who has worked with Newcastle Permanent for 40 years, said she believed the organisation had thrived for so long because it always put ‘customers first’.

"I have always been proud to say that I work for Newcastle Permanent," Jenny said. "We’re a strong, honest institution that always puts customers first. And our staff members are the most reliable and friendly group of people in this industry."

"After having my two daughters, I had the flexibility to come back either as a casual or part-time, which suited my family and allowed me to continue working."

Jenny, who now works from our Belmont branch, started work with Newcastle Permanent as a 19-year-old ‘cashier’ at Charlestown in 1978.

Leonnie Stocks is another of our long-serving employees. Leonnie, who started work with us as a 16-year-old cashier in 1977, said she had seen many changes over her time.

"There have been some big technology changes," she said. "Everything was recorded by hand on yellow cards that were put into a ledger machine that typed the transactions for us. No identification was needed to open an account and we knew all our members by name.

"When I started there was only one savings account and one type of loan account, and now we offer many different types of accounts to better suit our customers."

Leonnie agreed that Newcastle Permanent had been in business for so long because "we are here for our customers".

We think it’s a testament to our organisation that people like Leonnie and Jenny have happily work here for four decades or more. We also value the fact that the culture of Newcastle Permanent can be good for families.

Jason and Mandy Rozario have been married for 8 years. Jason started work at our Belmont branch, while Mandy started just up the road at our Swansea branch.

"The people are the best part of working for Newcastle Permanent, it feels like a big work family," Jason said. "And also the fact that the organisation does so much great community work, like staff volunteering, sponsoring Surf Life Saving and grassroots soccer."

Anthony and Kylie Hindmarch are another couple who’ve enjoyed the work-life balance that working with us has allowed them.

"We enjoy working with Newcastle Permanent because it allows us the flexibility to raise our family, with the knowledge that we both have solid careers with an organisation that cares about its staff and the community we live in," Kylie said.

The organisation that became Newcastle Permanent started as a cooperative, in which members put their savings together until everyone involved could afford to build a home. It was a radical idea with far-reaching benefits that helped people buy their own homes and build a stronger community.

These values have been at the heart of our business for 115 years. For more about our history, and to watch some fun historical TV commercials, visit our anniversary page below:
