Ballina branch celebrates 10 years of being 'different' to the major banks

Tuesday, 24 July, 2018.

Tammy, a Ballina local, said she felt a sense of achievement and renewed independence as she picked-up a new car bought with a Newcastle Permanent personal loan recently.

As she prepared to drive her new car home, she told us: "I’ve been without a car for months, so I’m really excited. I’m really quite independent but I’ve had to rely on other people to get around since I sold my old car, which was really annoying."

Tammy, who is 21 and works in administration, said she had appreciated the help from her local Newcastle Permanent branch in Ballina, which helped make the purchase possible.

"They have been really supportive and helpful,” she said. "I really like that the branch staff know your name and acknowledge you as a person, which makes me feel valued and not just another customer.

"The branch team is really good at finding the resources that are best for you, such as savings accounts that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise."

Tammy said she had banked with Newcastle Permanent for about eight years, because she wanted a service that’s 'a bit different' to the major banks. She appreciated the fact Newcastle Permanent was owned by its customers rather than by shareholders, she said.

As the branch celebrates its 10 year anniversary in Ballina, Branch Manager David Parker said many local customers like Tammy had found that Newcastle Permanent could offer more personalised service than other banks.

"I think people here know they can rely on us to do our best to help them meet their particular needs," David said. "The community here gets a friendly, reliable service from us and people see that we are invested in the local community. It’s satisfying for us when we see that we’ve helped people reach their financial goals; whether that’s to buy a new home, a vehicle, or to save and go on an overseas holiday."

David said he believed people also appreciated Newcastle Permanent’s investment in the Ballina community over the past 10 years.

"The community does appreciate the different events we provide and local sponsorships," he said. "Cinema Under the Stars has become a major event in the local calendar, growing in numbers each year. We sponsor Surf Life Saving on the Far North Coast of NSW, Northern NSW Football Association, Our Kids Day Out, Veterans Week of Golf, and the Schools Maths Comp."
