The Herald School Newspaper Competition is helping to turn students into budding journalists.

We're helping students to develop their love of writing, drawing and photography in a fun and practical way.

We’ve partnered with the Newcastle Herald for almost 30 years, giving students the opportunity to create their own school newspaper. Each year, almost 100 primary and high schools from across the Hunter and Central Coast join the competition, preparing a two-page newspaper that is published in the Newcastle Herald each Tuesday and Thursday during Terms 2-4.

The annual competition encourages students to use their writing, drawing and photography skills to create stories, editorial, advertisements and supporting images for their school newspaper. Recently, a multimedia category has also been added providing students with the opportunity to produce digital/video content.

The competition is a fantastic experience for students who are interested in a career in media and highlights the exceptional talents of students in our region
