Newcastle Permanent’s Cinema Under the Stars is Australia’s largest FREE regional outdoor cinema program, and it travels to 16 beautiful locations throughout regional New South Wales. 

We’re proud to host our flagship event in the magical King Edward Park again this year. This event draws huge numbers and is a highlight of the season. We hope you can join us to celebrate our 12th year. 

Due to the size of the event, there will be road closures. In an effort to minimise congestion and assist cinema goers, there will be a FREE shuttle bus service for our Newcastle event. This service will run on Saturday 12 January from 4.00pm until 11.59pm and make continuous trips between Hunter Parking and Storage (also known as Bolton Street Car Parking Station) and Bar Beach Carpark; making drop offs and pick-ups at King Edward Park. 

The following roads will be closed to non-resident vehicles on Saturday 12 January between:

  • 4:30pm to 11pm:  
    Wolfe St (Ordnance St to Reserve Rd)
  • 4:30pm to 11pm:  
    The Terrace (Reserve Rd/Bingle St)
    York Drive (Reserve Rd)

Residents will be able to gain access via Reserve Road however may be asked to show proof of residence, i.e. Drivers Licence. 

From 9am to 10.30pm: no vehicle access to King Edward Park via York Drive. 

Family favourite, The Greatest Showman will light up on the big screen as the sun sets on King Edward Park and the stars come out.

Enjoy the first class pre-movie entertainment including circus workshops by Circus in Education, football (soccer) activities, and live musicians on stage. 

Bring your camera as you just might get a glimpse of one of the characters from The Greatest Showman! 

The movie will commence on the big screen once the sun has set.

What are the seating arrangements?

Gosford: No glass, alcohol or chairs are permitted in the stadium to maintain the playing surface. Any prohibited items will be held at the gate to be collected at the end of the event. Prams are permitted and wheelchair access is provided.

All other events:You can bring low beach chairs, cushions, blankets and rugs. You may bring chairs however you will be asked to sit in the designated area so you do not obstruct the view of other audience members. Download a list of Gosford's Permitted and Not-Permitted items.

Can I buy food and drinks at the Cinema?
Yes, a delectable range of food and non-alcoholic drinks will be available to purchase.

Can I bring a picnic into the Cinema?
Yes, please feel free to prepare your own picnic to share with your friends and family, but please do not bring glass.

Can I bring alcohol into the Cinema?
We do not encourage alcohol consumption at the events and some venues are strictly alcohol- free locations. Please check with your local council to find out details about the park in your location. If you are planning to drink, plan NOT to drive. Plan ahead and arrange overnight accommodation or alternative transport. The event organisers reserve the right to ask anyone disrupting other patrons to leave.

Can I bring my furbaby?
Although we love all animals large and small, unfortunately Cinema Under the Stars isn’t the place for them. For the comfort and enjoyment of other patrons do not bring your pets with you.

What time does the movie start? 
The movie will start at sundown. Depending on location and time of year, it’s generally between 7.45pm- 8.30pm.  

What happens if it rains?
All patrons are advised to make provisions for wet weather. The use of umbrellas during screenings is not permitted as it obstructs the view of other audience members. To keep updated on weather, please visit our Facebook page and "like" us.

How will I know if the screening is cancelled?
In the event that a screening is cancelled, information will be posted on our website and at our Facebook page. 

Please note: Due to changing weather conditions cancellations may need to occur at short notice.

Will the movie have captions?
We will happily include closed captions at any Cinema Under the Stars event if we receive a request prior to the event. It’s important to us that everyone can come along and enjoy the evening, so if you require captions, please contact us. To ensure we can meet your request, please contact us at least 48 hrs prior to the event date.

Can I drive to the event?
Some locations have limited parking within the venue or in surrounding streets, however we do encourage patrons to use public transport or car pool to reduce traffic congestion, and to ensure all patrons arrive on time.

A FREE shuttle bus will be available for our Newcastle event. The bus is available from 4pm until 11.59pm and will do continuous loops every 10-15 minutes. Pick up points are Bar Beach Car Park and Bolton Street Car Park. Please refer to our Facebook page for regular updates and information.

Please note: The Event Promoter does NOT take responsibility for parking fines or break-ins or damage to vehicles - please note all relevant signage when parking, and take all valuables with you.

We require quality and reliable food vendors at these events. If you are interested in joining us please complete the form below.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the event we do not accept retail vendors such as glow sticks, market stalls etc. to minimise the outlay by families attending our free events.

As space is limited for vendors per site, the event organiser reserves the right to select the necessary vendors for each location.
