Overview from the Chair Phil Neat and the Executive Officer Graham Batten

In 2016/17 Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation sustained our mission of making a significant difference to the lives of disadvantaged and marginalised people in NSW regional communities. Sadly, we also farewelled a dear friend and inspirational leader.

In our 14th year, the Foundation provided over $1.6m in grants to 33 community initiatives across regional NSW. These grants were provided for projects to directly address disadvantage, marginalisation or isolation in our three strategic focus areas of supporting health initiatives, youth development and social wellbeing for our communities. This year’s grants took the Foundation’s total funding commitment for community initiatives and endeavours to over $16.7million for more than 400 projects since our inception in 2003.

In March 2017, Michael Slater stood down as Chair due to ill health after almost 10 years in the role. Sadly, Michael passed away in July this year which was a loss felt deeply at the Foundation and also the many community organisations he cherished or supported over his lifetime. He was instrumental in developing the Foundation’s clear strategy, governance structure and community commitment and will be greatly missed, both for his professionalism as a leader and the esteem in which he was held by his fellow Foundation and Newcastle Permanent Building Society Directors and the staff of the two organisations. A tribute to Michael is included in this year’s Annual Review.

The Foundation Board elected Phil Neat as the new Chair in March 2017. Phil has been a Director of the Foundation since its inception in 2003 and brings the same passion to the role for the recognition and advancement of regional communities in Australia.

The Foundation acknowledges the continuing significant support provided by Newcastle Permanent Building Society which allows us to focus on our mission and maximise the funds available to support charitable projects and initiatives.

Finally, the Foundation thanks and acknowledges our charity partners who, in the face of ever increasing demand and constant change, remain dedicated to their mission of improving the lives of the most vulnerable in our community. We take great pride in the unselfish work and achievements of these dedicated volunteers and staff to make our communities a better place.

Please enjoy reviewing a selection of their stories in our 2016/17 Annual Review.
