Phil Neat, Charitable Foundation Chairman

In this very sad week we’ve learned of the passing of our friend, Director and former Foundation Chairman, Michael Slater.

I have been fortunate to witness the wonderful service Mike gave in his role as a Director and Chairman of the Foundation over the past 10 years, during which time he established himself as a champion of philanthropy within the region and State.

As Foundation Chairman, Mike made a substantial contribution to the Foundation’s grant giving framework and comprehensive governance structure. His passion for supporting the community has made a significant difference to the not-for-profit sector as the Foundation has grown to become what we believe is the largest of its kind in regional NSW.

Mike was always generous with his time. Throughout the past decade, he dedicated countless hours to travelling throughout regional NSW to engage with community groups and support Foundation-funded initiatives. He was intent on showing how valued these programs were, along with the people implementing them. He always maintained that the Foundation only enabled the true ‘heavy lifting’ done by the staff and volunteers of the Foundation’s partners in bringing about benefits to disadvantaged and marginalised members of our community.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have worked alongside Mike for nearly 15 years, and I look forward to continuing the Charitable Foundation’s great work within the community and honouring his legacy.

Mike was the patriarch of the Foundation family for 10 of its 14 years, and his co-Directors, staff and our community partners will miss him immensely. We think now of his family, Neryl, sons Scott and Gavin, and their families, as they farewell their beloved husband, father and grandfather.
