Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation a winner at the first ever Cancer Council Awards.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation was named Cancer Council NSW’s “Corporate Supporter of the Year” at the first ever Cancer Council NSW Supporter Awards held this November.

The award, presented at a function that captured the entire spectrum of Cancer Council NSW’s supporter community, recognised the strength of the relationship that has benefited thousands of people in regional communities facing a cancer diagnosis.

The Charitable Foundation has a relationship with Cancer Council NSW that extends back to 2005 when the two organisations collaborated to develop a regional cancer forum in the Hunter region. Over the past 14 years the Charitable Foundation and Cancer Council NSW have worked on projects spanning cancer information services, new technology to reduce hair loss as a result of chemotherapy and support for Transport to Treatment, a volunteer run service that provides free transport to assist people accessing cancer treatment in hospital.

The Charitable Foundation has funded the acquisition of 6 vehicles used by volunteers to provide Transport to Treatment in locations throughout regional locations. Each vehicle eases the burden of accessing cancer services on patients and families and recognises that, for regional and rural patients, lack of transport options is a significant barrier to effective cancer treatment.

This year Cancer Council NSW has partnered with Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation to launch an online Transport to Treatment booking system, ‘TRIPS’, across NSW. TRIPS is an integrated, online booking system which will increase the reach, efficiency and effectiveness of the Transport to Treatment program. The $154,000 grant from the Charitable Foundation to build and roll out the system will mean that more patients in regional and rural NSW can access free, direct transport assistance to help reduce the burden of cancer.
