Travel checklist
Here's a handy travel checklist to help you make sure you haven't forgotten anything for you trip.
- Passport – allow enough time to obtain documents like passports – most are not available over the counter. Also, check that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the period for which you are travelling.
- Visas – allow ample time to obtain all necessary visas before you depart.
- Booking accommodation and flights – generally, you can save money by booking your flights and accommodation as far in advance as possible.
- Packing – be aware of luggage weight and size limits – significant charges are applied to excess baggage. Don’t take more than you are willing to carry – lay everything you plan to pack out first and decide whether you really need it.
- Travel documents – make two copies of important travel documents i.e. passport, travel insurance policy, visa, itinerary and tickets.
- Access to money - if you're travelling overseas ensure you have enough foreign currency to get to your hotel. It's important to have a number of options to access your money when you're away from home. Drop into your local branch, where our staff can assist you with a range of ways to access your money when travelling.
- Insurance – purchase travel insurance before, or as soon as you pay for your trip. Take one copy with you and leave one copy with a family member or friend. Quotes can be arranged online, by visiting any branch or calling 13 19 87.
- Vaccinations – visit your local doctor well before departure regarding any vaccinations that may be recommended.
- Medications – some ingredients in medications may be prohibited in some countries. If essential medication is required while travelling, you should ensure that you carry a letter from your doctor stating their approval.
- Check in – confirm with your airline the minimum check-in time prior to departure.
- Deliveries/bills – don’t forget to cancel deliveries e.g. milk, papers etc. and pay any bills. Ask someone to collect your mail while you are away.
- Travel warnings – check for any travel warnings or advice at www.smarttraveller.gov.au/.
