VISA 'chip' Credit and Debit cards

A VISA 'chip' credit or debit card has a security microchip embedded in the card which stores security information.

To help you further understand how the VISA 'chip' Credit and Debit cards work, we have put together some frequently asked questions.

Can I continue to use my magnetic stripe card?

Yes. Terminals updated for chip compliance will still allow operation of  magnetic stripe only cards. Where a terminal is not chip compliant your card will be swiped utilising the magnetic stripe.

How do I use my VISA card with chip technology?

As retailers and other businesses upgrade their terminals to new chip terminals the way in which you use your chip card will change. They will ask you to insert your card into the terminal for the duration of the transaction – instead of swiping the magnetic stripe. You will still have the option of signing or using your PIN to accept the transaction. Your VISA chip credit or debit card will continue to work in ATMs as normal.

Does the introduction of VISA chip credit/debit cards mean that the magnetic stripe is not secure?

Protecting your VISA credit/debit card from fraud and theft is very important to us.  The new chip technology offers an additional level of security on top of the existing security measures used in the card.

What about using my VISA chip card online?

You can continue to use your new VISA chip card details for online shopping as you do currently. Chip cards are not processed any differently, and do not provide extra security for online shopping.  For more information on electronic security read the Security Advice on our website or our Important Security Information brochure - call 13 19 87 for a copy, or ask at any branch.

Are VISA chip cards 100% secure?

Chip cards represent one of the highest levels of security currently available to protect payment information and prevent fraud.  Chip cards employ a range of security features and measures that work together to protect your card.

Will my VISA chip card work in an ATM?

Yes. Your VISA chip credit or debit card will work in ATMs as normal.

Will I be able to use my VISA chip card overseas?

Yes.  Cards employing chip technology are widely accepted around the world and many countries have already introduced them – your Newcastle Permanent VISA chip card will be compatible with those systems.

I am travelling overseas.  Can I use a non-chip VISA credit/debit card in other countries?

Yes. A VISA credit/debit card without a chip can continue to be used in the same locations as a VISA chip credit/debit card.

However, in some countries you may be asked to use your PIN instead of signing to authorise your purchase or you may even be asked for both a PIN and a signature.

For this reason, we recommend that you always know your PIN when travelling overseas.
If you require further assistance when overseas please call - Member Support +61 2 4907 6501 , or call into any VISA agency.

I am planning to travel overseas and my Newcastle Permanent VISA credit/debit card doesn't have a chip. Can I request a VISA chip credit/debit card?

If your Newcastle Permanent VISA credit/debit card does not have a chip, you can request a replacement chip card to be issued to you.  There will be a cost for the replacement card.

Please ensure you allow sufficient time for the card to be produced and dispatched prior to your departure, preferably a minimum of two weeks. To request a replacement VISA credit/debit card, please call our Member Support Centre on 13 19 87.

When will I get my Newcastle Permanent VISA chip credit/debit card?

Newcastle Permanent is progressively introducing VISA credit and debit cards with chip technology. You will receive a VISA chip credit/debit card the next time your card is renewed or replaced.

What should I do if I do not know my PIN?

If you have forgotten your PIN please call our Member Support Centre on 13 19 87.

Does the card require a PIN for all transactions?

While you may continue to use your signature in most situations to accept a transaction, using your unique PIN is recommended as an additional security measure.

Will I get a new PIN with the card?

We will try to limit the situations where a new PIN will be issued, so that you can continue to use your current PIN.  When you receive your card, the attached letter will tell you if a new PIN is also being issued.  For security reasons, your PIN will be issued in a separate letter.

Will I still be able to change my PIN?

Yes. You will be able to change to a PIN of your choice at any Newcastle Permanent ATM.

I received a new VISA chip card but no PIN. Should I be receiving one?

The letter attached to your card will indicate whether a new PIN will be issued.  For security reasons, your PIN will be issued in a separate letter.

How will I know if a VISA chip card transaction is successful or declined?

The terminal will provide the status of the transaction, similar to the way it does now, once the authorisation process is completed.

What should I do with my VISA chip card if I close my account?

If you close your account, you must return your card and cards issued to any additional cardholder, to any Newcastle Permanent branch (cut through the chip for your protection).  You will be liable for any transaction you or any additional cardholder make until the card is returned to Newcastle Permanent.

What if my card is lost or stolen?

Please follow the current process as usual to report your lost/stolen card – contact the Member Support Centre immediately on 13 19 87, or if overseas, call +61 2 4907 6501.  Emergency replacement Visa cards will be issued as a temporary non-chip card.

Do I still have to sign my card?

Yes.

Will transaction charges increase for using a VISA chip card?

Current fees and charges will continue to apply.
