Important information regarding ATM Direct Charging
Did you know you may be charged a fee when you use a non Newcastle Permanent (‘foreign’) ATM by the ATM owners?
On 3 March 2009, direct charging at ATMs commenced across Australia. This initiative is supported by the Reserve Bank of Australia, affects the entire finance industry.
What is direct charging?
When you conduct a withdrawal or balance enquiry at a ‘foreign’ ATM, the owner of that ATM will charge you a fee for that transaction.
How does it work?
After you key in your PIN, a message will appear on the ATM screen and you will be shown how much the ATM owner will charge you to use the ATM.
You will be asked whether you want to continue with your transaction or whether you want to cancel.
- If you decide to continue, the ATM owner’s fee will be taken out of your account at the time of the transaction.
- If you decide to cancel, no fee applies
This means if you use a foreign ATM to withdraw money, your account will be debited for the withdrawal amount plus the direct charge fee charged by the ATM owner.
Newcastle Permanent will not charge a Foreign ATM Withdrawal Fee or Foreign ATM Enquiry Fee for the transaction.
How can you avoid direct charges?
You can avoid direct charges by minimising your use of foreign ATMs and choosing to withdraw cash at:
- one of over 110 ATMs supplied by Newcastle Permanent, or
- one of our 55 branches, which offer extended opening hours.
In addition, try and withdraw cash when you make EFTPOS purchases; and where possible use other non-cash payment options such as credit cards and BPAY®.
