15 December 2009 Newcastle Permanent provides $25,000 to Taree PCYC for new multi-purpose vehicle.

Taree PCYC will officially launch its new multi-purpose vehicle on Tuesday 15 December, with the assistance of a $25,000 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation.

The multi-purpose vehicle aims to reduce the incidence of youth crime and anti-social behaviour throughout the Manning Valley by improving access to healthy, positive activities for young people.

Fitted out with large screen televisions and X Box game consoles, the mobile vehicle will be used in a number of crime "hotspots" identified by police across the Lower North Coast region.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Chairman Michael Slater said the Charitable Foundation provided the $25,000 grant to Taree PCYC to help them engage young people who do not have access to transport to attend the PCYC in Commerce Street.

"Due to the lack of public transport, geographical isolation and economic disadvantage, the vehicle will provide the outlying community with regular opportunities to engage young people in positive and structured activities," said Mr Slater.

Taree PCYC Manager Tim Doyle said the grant from Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation is of great benefit to both the young people involved in PCYC and the greater community.

"We would like to thank the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation for helping us to create the vehicle, because without these funds the project could not have gone ahead," said Mr Doyle.

Community groups can request the vehicle attend local events and activities by phoning Tim Doyle on 6551 0292.

The launch of the vehicle will take place at Lansdowne Public School and will be attended by special guest, ex-NRL player, Captain /Coach of the newly re-formed Taree Bulls and Taree PCYC volunteer, Wise Kativerata.

50 Lansdowne school students will test the new vehicle, learn ball skills from Wise Kativerata and enjoy a sausage sandwich and drink for recess.

09 December 2009 $20,000 to help Hunter Children with special needs.

Hunter Prelude has officially opened its new multi sensory room, with the assistance of a $20,000 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation.

Hunter Prelude is an early intervention centre based at Kurri Kurri that provides education and therapy programs to children (0 to 5 years) with special needs.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Chairman Michael Slater said the Foundation provided the $20,000 grant to assist Hunter Prelude in developing a sensory room, which will be used in education and therapy programs.

"Many of the children who attend Hunter Prelude are either over sensitive or under sensitive to sensory stimulus in their environment. As a result the child can be unaware of the world around them or they cannot cope with their surroundings,” Mr Slater said.

"The multi-sensory room will provide equipment to allow teachers and therapists to provide educational therapy and programs for the children, which will assist them to better cope with their environment."

"We would like to thank the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation for helping us fit out the multi-sensory room. This support will make an enormous difference to the children and their families," said Hunter Prelude’s Acting Manager Belinda Donkin.

"Hunter Prelude provides a vital service to families in Cessnock, Maitland, Muswellbrook and Scone by providing treatment for up to 90 children each day, Mr Slater said.

"Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation recognises the important work that Hunter Prelude does and we are delighted to provide funding to assist their work."

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation has supported a diverse range of projects in the Cessnock region in recent times including the Cessnock District Learning Centre $67,000, Cessnock PCYC $10,000, Endeavour Industries $50,000 and Cessnock Community Training Centre $20,000.

07 December 2009 Newcastle Permanent lifts interest rates on home loans.

Newcastle Permanent Building Society announced today that it is increasing its variable home loan rates by 0.31%, following the Reserve Bank's increase in official interest rates last week.

The increase for variable rate home loans will be effective on Wednesday, 9 December with new repayments for existing borrowers to apply from February 2010.

Newcastle Permanent CEO Terry Millett said the cost of funding remains relatively expensive due to intense price competition for retail deposits among all financial institutions as well as persistently high wholesale funding costs.

"Newcastle Permanent must fairly balance the interests of our depositing and lending members when considering interest rate changes," Mr Millett said.

"As the AFR Smart Investor Home Lender of the Year, Newcastle Permanent is committed to providing its members with highly competitive home loans like its most popular and multi award winning Real Deal Home Loan which offers a rate of just 5.97% pa.

"Newcastle Permanent's term deposits also offer highly competitive rates compared to the major banks, with 7.0% pa for 12 months and 6.10% pa for 7 months for all amounts over $5,000," Mr Millett said.
"If existing members or prospective members would like more information about these interest rate changes we encourage them to call us on 13 19 87 or visit our extensive branch network."

10 November 2009 -  Local students come first in Newcastle Permanent Primary Mathematics Competition.

Thornton Public School student Thomas Milton and Jewells Public School student Jessica Tyler have blitzed over 16,000 students to receive the highest marks in the 2009 Newcastle Permanent Primary Mathematics Competition.

In September, Thomas and Jessica completed the 35-question exam in just 45 minutes without the aid of calculators, rulers or geometrical instruments along with students from more than 260 schools in the Hunter, Central Coast, New England and Northern Regions.

This was the 29th year of the annual Newcastle Permanent Primary Mathematics Competition, which is the largest exam of its type outside of the New South Wales Department of Education and Training's Basic Skills Test.

Newcastle Permanent CEO Terry Millett said it is very encouraging to see the number of students who participated in the competition this year and students from all regions achieving excellent results.

"It is tremendous to see the competition going from strength to strength. In 1981 when we first sponsored the event there were just 2,337 students from the Hunter participating. Now there are over 16,000 students from across the Hunter and Northern NSW.

"Numeric literacy is a fundamental skill and by sponsoring this competition, we hope to encourage young people to develop a passion for mathematics," said Mr Millett.

All high achieving students will be honored at a presentation ceremony at the Crusaders Lounge of Energy Australia Stadium on Wednesday, 11 November 2009.

05 November 2009 -  Newcastle Permanent lifts interest rates on deposit accounts and home loans.

Newcastle Permanent Building Society announced today that it would increase its variable mortgage rates by 0.25% per annum, following the Reserve Bank's latest increase in official interest rates.

The increase for variable rate home loans will be effective on Monday, 9 November with new repayments for existing borrowers to apply from January 2010.

Newcastle Permanent CEO Terry Millett said as the AFR Smart Investor Home Lender of the Year, Newcastle Permanent is committed to providing its members with highly competitive home loans and they will remain so after this change.

Newcastle Permanent also announced increases in the interest rates on its key investment and savings accounts including the multi award winning and highly popular Rapid Saver savings account, which increased by 0.30% to 4.60% per annum also effective Monday, 9 November.

"As a mutual organisation we aim to ensure an equitable spread of costs and benefits across our member base". Mr Millett said.

"As part of our review of interest rates we have also increased our 12 month Term Deposit rate by 0.30% to 5.75% p.a. and lifted our 5 year Term Deposit rate to 7.0% p.a. for all amounts over $5,000 with interest paid at maturity".

23 October 2009 -  Newcastle Permanent announces solid financial result at AGM.

At the 2009 Annual General Meeting held today, Newcastle Permanent announced a net profit after tax of $29.2 million for the financial year ended 30 June 2009.

Chairman Michael Slater said the results represent a solid financial performance in a very challenging operating environment.

"The Global Financial Crisis has continued to impact all financial institutions in Australia and around the world. As a result, wholesale and retail funding costs have remained high and put pressure on lending margins," Mr. Slater said.

"While the net profit result represents a slight decrease on the strong result for the 2008 financial year of $35.3 million, our underlying profit before one-off items increased by 2.9% year on year and Total Members’ Equity increased by $40.7 million."

"In addition to our net profit, each year Newcastle Permanent calculates the total value provided to our members through better interest rates and lower fees compared to the major banks. We call this member benefit the ‘mutuality dividend’, which is independently calculated by CANSTAR CANNEX, Australia’s leading financial services research firm.

"This financial year we provided $59.8 million in mutuality dividends to our members.

"Our commitment to the community remains a key priority. The Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation has now contributed more than $4.75 million in grants to more than 140 charitable organisations since we established the Foundation in 2004," Mr. Slater added.

Newcastle Permanent Chief Executive Officer Terry Millett said Newcastle Permanent remains financially strong because of its exceptional loan quality, loyal members and a large retail deposit base.

"The exceptional credit quality of our home loan portfolio is especially pleasing, with our arrears rates significantly below the NSW and national averages for other equivalent financial institutions.

A key indicator of the strength of our organisation is the level of our Tier 1 capital, which stood at 18.76% at 30 June 2009, well in excess of the minimum regulatory capital requirement of 8% and far in excess of our key competitors including the major and regional banks.

"As further independent endorsement of the financial strength of Newcastle Permanent, Standard & Poor’s recently reaffirmed our long-term credit rating at BBB+ with a stable outlook. This is the highest credit rating for any building society or credit union in Australia and is equivalent to that earned by much larger competitors such as the Bank of Queensland and Bendigo and Adelaide Bank.

"We are also pleased to report that in our most recent member satisfaction survey, conducted in June this year, we have maintained our exceptionally high level of member satisfaction at 97%.

"With a focus on providing our members a complete range of high quality products it was gratifying to win Building Society of the Year, for the second consecutive year and be named Home Lender of the Year by the Australian Financial Review Smart Investor Blue Ribbon Awards, ahead of every financial institution in Australia including the major banks.

"As a mutual organisation we are also dedicated to looking after our people. Despite the financial pressures of the difficult operating environment, we have not attempted to reduce expenses by implementing initiatives such as outsourcing key functions to lower cost countries, nor have we introduced large-scale forced staff redundancy programs.

"We believe that our people are a vital asset and these sorts of actions are not only short-sighted, but also negatively impact member service and employee satisfaction. In addition, we believe our communities expect better from their building society," Mr Millett said.

"The year ahead continues to contain many challenges as the Australian and world economic outlook remains uncertain, however, we are extremely well placed to deliver another solid performance in the next financial year.

"We look to the future with confidence and optimism as we continue our mission to deliver high quality, competitively priced financial products, excellent member service and high levels of support to the communities we are part of. That’s what we’re here for."

21 August 2009 -  Newcastle Permanent named Australian Home Lender of the Year.

Newcastle Permanent has out-performed all of the Banks, Building Societies and Credit Unions in Australia, to be recognised as the Home Lender of the Year in the Australian Financial Review’s Smart Investor Blue Ribbon Awards, which were officially announced today.

Newcastle Permanent CEO Terry Millett said the award is an acknowledgement of the high quality mortgage products and competitive pricing delivered to Newcastle Permanent members.

"This is the first time that a major or regional bank hasn't won this award and is further evidence Newcastle Permanent is providing its members with a genuine alternative to the traditional banks" Mr Millett said.

"We were judged Home Lender of the Year following an independent assessment of our mortgage products across all categories by one of Australia’s leading financial services research firms, Infochoice"

Newcastle Permanent was also named Building Society of the Year for the second consecutive year and also won awards for fixed rate home loans and personal loans. Newcastle Permanent received more awards than any other financial institution in Australia.

"To win the Building Society of the Year award back to back also reflects the overall excellence of our products, which is something we are also very proud of," Mr Millett said.

"Now our members know that the organisation that has always been there for the
community is also a smart choice for all their financial services."

All the awards are judged by Infochoice, which employs its comprehensive database of lending and banking products to calculate the winners in each category.

6 August 2009 -  $25,000 to help North Coast Women fight breast cancer.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation has provided BreastScreen NSW North Coast with $25,000 to improve its radiology equipment.

Director of BreastScreen NSW North Coast, Jane Walsh said the new equipment has been installed at the Lismore and Port Macquarie BreastScreen sites located at the Base Hospitals and in the mobile screening van.

"The funding was used to purchase six larger digital X--ray plates," said Ms Walsh.

"The larger plates mean we are able to provide a better service to a wider range of women, in some cases reducing the number of x-rays taken from 12 to 4. Our clients are delighted with the improvement."

"Because we have to take less x-rays, some appointments times are shorter, which means we can now screen more women." said Ms Walsh.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Chairman, Michael Slater said BreastScreen NSW North Coast provides a vital community service and one which the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation is proud to support.

"Women in NSW currently have a one in nine chance of developing breast cancer at some stage in their lifetime, and early detection is a vital element in the success of treatment." Mr Slater said.

"By increasing the number of mammograms that can be conducted in a day we can improve early detection rates and have a positive impact on the health of women on the North Coast and reduce family stress."

Early detection is the key to fighting breast cancer – women aged 50 -69 years are particularly encouraged to contact BreastScreen NSW North Coast for their free two yearly mammogram. However all women over 40 years of age (including 70 and over) are able to received free mammograms. Appointments can be made by phoning 13 2050.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation is also inviting not-for-profit organisations from the Mid North Coast to apply for funding for local, community projects by 6 August 2009. Visit www.newcastlepermanent.com.au/foundation for more information.

4 August 2009 -  Newcastle Permanent Staff open their hearts to children in need.

Employees of Newcastle Permanent Building Society will donate $20,655 to local organisation Central Coast Kids in Need to assist families of seriously ill children who need to treatment in Sydney or Newcastle.

Operating for over 15 years, the Newcastle Permanent Staff Charity Program is supported by over 600 Newcastle Permanent employees who commit a percentage of their fortnightly wages to the program.

Participating employees vote for two worthy community organisations to receive funding each year.

Newcastle Permanent CEO Terry Millett said he commended Newcastle Permanent Staff on the selection of Central Coast Kids in Need.

"Having a seriously ill child has a significant financial impact on a family, particularly when the treatment is away from home."

"While there are some excellent low cost accommodation options such as Ronald McDonald House available to families, even this small cost can accumulate over time," Mr Millett said.

Over the last financial year Central Coast Kids in Need has provided $156,000 in funding to 115 families. This funding assisted with costs associated with accommodation and travel as well as purchasing essential equipment.

Central Coast Kids in Need volunteer Lorraine Churchill said the $20,655 provided by the Newcastle Permanent employees was a fantastic boost to the organisation.

"With such a generous amount of money, we’ll be able to help at least 20 families," said Ms Churchill.

When: 3pm, Wednesday 5 August 2009

Newcastle Permanent was last night awarded the prestigious title of Building Society of the Year 2009 in the Australian Banking & Finance (AB&F) Awards.

The awards were judged by a panel of industry experts, which included senior representatives from organisations such as Macquarie Bank, HBOS Australia, St George Bank, Finsia (Financial Services Institute of Australasia) and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The Building Society of the Year category was judged on member and community benefits, customer service, market share and competitiveness of products and pricing.

Newcastle Permanent Building Society Chief Executive Officer Terry Millett accepted the award last night at a gala dinner held at the Westin Hotel in Sydney.

"It is an honour to have won this award and been judged Best Building Society from among our peers," Mr Millett said.

"Newcastle Permanent’s broad range of products delivers significant benefits to our members in terms of better interest rates, lower fees and market leading features - all of which highlight our superior offering."

26 May 2009 -  Foundation helps bring smiles to young cancer patients.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation has given $10,000 to the Hope Bears Charity to bring some joy into hospital stays for children with cancer.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Chairman Michael Slater said Hope Bears Charity volunteers make 'Gifts of Hope' including teddy bears, hand puppets, beanies, scarves and blankets – for young patients at the John Hunter Hospital (JHH).

"The support from the Charitable Foundation will help fund the materials needed to make the gifts for the children being treated at the hospital," Mr Slater said.

He said many children from all over regional NSW were treated at JHH because it was the closest treatment facility available to them.

"Hope Bears Charity provides these children with a little bit of happiness as they soldier through their medical treatment and the angst of being away from home," Mr Slater said.

Hope Bears Charity Coordinator Laraine Wilson said the gifts were a small but appreciated gesture for sick children and are much appreciated by their families.

"It is such a joy to be deliver the Hope Bears gifts. It‟s often the element of surprise rather the actual gift which puts a smile on the child's face" Ms Wilson said.

The Hope Bears Charity was established in Woolgoolga in 2001 and is run by volunteers. It also distributes gifts through Ronal McDonald House in Newcastle and Tamworth.

Hope Bears Charity Founder Frances Robinson said the support provided by Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation was very much appreciated.

“Volunteers usually purchase materials such as wool and ribbon themselves,” Mrs Robinson said.

"A $10,000 boost means we will be able to make hundreds of items without worrying about the costs of buying the materials."

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation is currently seeking applications for its next funding round, which closes 6 August 2009.

To make an application or to obtain further information, go to the website, phone 13 19 87, or visit a Newcastle Permanent branch.

09 April 2009 -  Newcastle Permanent cuts home loans by 0.15%, credit card and personal loans by 0.50%.

Newcastle Permanent announced today it would reduce its variable mortgage interest rate by 0.15% following the decision of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to reduce official interest rates.

The decrease will be effective on 20 April, with lower home loan repayments effective from that date.
CEO Terry Millett said the cost of funding remains very expensive due to intense price competition for retail deposits amongst all financial institutions and wholesale funding costs at historic highs.

"In light of the current economic climate and with the aim of fairly balancing the interests of our depositing and lending members, we believe it is prudent to pass on a reduction of 0.15% on this occasion to our home loan members."

The 0.15% decrease in mortgage interest rates will mean a further decrease in repayments of $22 per month on an average $250,000 home loan taken over 25 years.

Newcastle Permanent also announced significant reductions of 0.50% in the interest rates on its Value Plus Credit Card and secured Personal Loans.

"This interest rate reduction places Newcastle Permanent’s most popular and multi award winning variable rate home loan, Real Deal, at 5.16%. We also offer our members some of the best fixed rate home loans available in Australia. For example our two year fixed rate home loan is now just 4.94% pa," added Mr Millett.

06 April 2009 -  Newcastle Permanent – here for members facing tough times.

Newcastle Permanent is reminding its members who think they might be facing potential loan repayment difficulties to make contact as soon as possible.

"The Federal Government announced yesterday that the major banks will offer mortgage relief to customers who are in financial hardship. Newcastle Permanent has had an assistance programme in place for members with home loan repayment difficulties for over 25 years," Mr Millett said.

Newcastle Permanent CEO Terry Millett said as a mutual organisation we always place our members first by being very careful not to over-commit members on loans including home loans.

"Our experience over the last 105 years is that our conservative approach to lending helps our members to stay out of difficulty."

"However for members who find themselves in financial difficulty, early action is vital," said Mr Millett.

"We do not believe in a "one-size fits all" approach. We tailor an approach to each member based on their individual circumstances."

"Once a member has made contact with us we can explore a range of options to help members manage through a difficult period due to a change in their personal circumstances, including: Using advance repayments to take a "repayment holiday"; Extending the term of the loan up to 30 years; Lowering members’ repayments by converting the home loan to interest-only; and, Deferring or reducing home loan repayments for a period of time.

"As a result of our prudent and sensible approach to lending, very few of our members ever find themselves in financial difficulty, and consequently our credit quality remains excellent and significantly better than the NSW average including the major banks."

14 February 2009 -  Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation donates $40,000 to local Family Support Service.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation has granted $40,000 to Tamworth Family Support Service (TFSS) for the purchase of a Mini Bus to transport its clients. This service will benefit socially and financially disadvantaged families in Tamworth, Werris Creek, Quirindi, Manilla and Barraba.

The 12-seater Toyota Hiace Mini Bus will transport families to services provided by TFSS including, attending groups, supported playgroup, transporting children in the care of Department of Community Services to contact visits with their parents or siblings and moving families escaping from domestic violence.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Chairman Michael Slater said the Mini bus will provide a much-needed service to many disadvantaged families who live in isolated areas where there are minimal transport options and they wish to access Tamworth Family Support Service.

"This Mini bus will not only provide a transport alternative it will also increase families opportunities to access the services offered by Tamworth Family Support, and ultimately improve the outcomes for children and families," said Mr. Slater.

Tamworth Family Support Service has 30 staff and provides a range of community programs and services including Supported Playgroups, Women and Children's Refuge, Early Intervention, Children's Contact Centre and groupwork programs.

In 2006/07, Tamworth Family Support Services assisted over 2,500 families across all 7 programs. It is anticipated these numbers will increase with the provision of the new Mini bus.

"We pride ourselves on being able to support community organisations which, without our assistance, may not be able to raise the funds to achieve the valuable benefits they provide to their local communities," Mr. Slater said.

The Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation is an ongoing initiative and is inviting registered charitable organisations to apply for a grant. The next round of applications close 2 April 2009.

13 February 2009 -  Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation grants Armidale a new lease on (wild) life.

Citizens Wildlife Corridors Armidale has received a $7,500 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation to assist in protecting and maintaining the Armidale Walking Track.

The Armidale Walking Track is home to rare communities of native flora and fauna and is enjoyed by 60 plus walkers each day.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Chairman Michael Slater said the work Citizens Wildlife Corridors Armidale is undertaking in regenerating previously cleared and farmed land is of great importance.

"$5,000 of the grant will be used to build three 20 metre fences to stop motor vehicles entering the track and damaging native vegetation."

"The remaining funds will be used to purchase and plant native flora to help prevent erosion of the track and to encourage native wildlife."

"Regenerating this land with indigenous plants, will not only benefit current walkers and wildlife, it will enable future generations to enjoy the simple pleasures of nature," Mr Slater said.

Citizens Wildlife Corridors was established in 1991 to encourage private landholders to accommodate wildlife and use sustainable land use practices.

Through assisting landholders with grant subsidies, it enables them to protect native remnant vegetation, build multi-purpose wildlife corridors (such as this one) with indigenous vegetation and to link them existing native bush-land.

CWC members have planted more than 55,548 indigenous shrubs and trees and built 11.6 km x 20 m wide, wildlife corridors to link to native bush-land.

"We pride ourselves on being able to support community organisations which, without our assistance, may not be able to raise the funds to achieve the valuable benefits they provide to their local communities," Mr. Slater said.

04 February 2009 - Newcastle Permanent to reduce variable mortgage rates by a full 1.0%.

Newcastle Permanent announced today it would reduce variable mortgage interest rates by a full 1.0% following the Reserve Bank of Australia's decision to cut official interest rates yesterday.

The decrease in Newcastle Permanent's variable mortgage interest rates will be effective on Monday, 16 February with lower home loan repayments also effective from that date.

Newcastle Permanent CEO Terry Millett said, "The deterioration of global economic conditions and uncertainty in financial markets continues to increase the cost of providing the funds we lend to our members. However, we are aware of the financial pressure our members with home loans are facing and we are pleased to be able to pass on the full rate reduction."

"Newcastle Permanent as a mutually owned organisation must fairly balance the interests of our depositing and lending members. Looking forward we need to consider any future change in mortgage interest rates in light of the funding costs at that time."

The 1.0% percent decrease in mortgage interest rates will mean a further decrease in repayments of $152 per month on an average $250,000 home loan taken over 25 years.

"With this interest rate reduction, Newcastle Permanent home loans remain highly competitive against all financial institutions. For example, the interest rate applicable to our most popular variable rate home loan the multi award-winning Real Deal home loan will be 5.31% per year" Mr. Millett said.

"Newcastle Permanent is a genuine alternative to the traditional retail banks and our portfolio of home loans has more CANNEX 5-star rated mortgages than any other bank, building society or credit union in Australia."
