Technical Aid to the Disabled - April 2008
Creating Hope project
Technical Aid to the Disabled NSW (TAD) began in 1973 and now has 12 regional branches. TAD supplies custom designed aids, re-conditioned computers and a bike service to people with a wide range of disabilities from all age groups, including clients with multiple and profound disabilities and clients from culturally and linguistically diverse groups.
The "Creating Hope" project involves providing children that have debilitating disabilities with a fresh start to life. The project will provide eight children aged 4-14 years living in the Newcastle LGA with non-commercial custom designed aids (e.g. walking devices, bikes, wheelchairs, walking trolleys etc) to assist them develop motor skills, allowing them to socially interact and develop learning opportunities.
Funds were sought to cover material costs, delivery of the aids, costs associated with delivering and monitoring the program (i.e. making sure that the child is capable and competent in using the aid) and Help Desk support. The Help Desk is a telephone help line where families of children with disabilities can phone for information and advice.
The Foundation has funded similar projects with TAD for the past two years. This funding has improved the quality of life for approximately 25 local families impacted by social disability.
