Hunter Melanoma Foundation - August 2008

Purchase of research equipment

Hunter Melanoma Foundation (HMF) is a not-for profit community group formed in 1986 by patients of the Newcastle Melanoma Unit. Funded solely through community donations and fundraising the Foundation aims to promote and advocate sun safety and awareness in the Hunter. HMF is also the peak melanoma body in this region.

Funds are sought to assist in the purchase of a Micro Plate Recoder for the melanoma research laboratory to enable high performance testing of multiple cell samples. This piece of equipment will enable researchers to address the specific problem of why melanoma cells do not respond to chemotherapy.

This piece of equipment is likely to directly assist over 750 local residents (from throughout the Hunter) each year. The equipment has an expected shelf life of five years.
