Australian Red Cross - August 2008
Good Start Breakfast Club program
Australian Red Cross delivers over 60 community service programs ranging from disaster emergency services to first aid training to youth and aged care services as well as blood supplies. Since 1914 Red Cross has been responding to the needs of people of all ages, from elderly and socially isolated people through to marginalised and at-risk youth.
The Good Start Breakfast Club (GSBC) program ensures that children (primary school aged) who may otherwise go hungry receive a healthy and nutritious breakfast. Breakfast Clubs aim to positively change or influence the eating habits of children and enhance the ability for children to learn through improved concentration.
Our funds will ensure the future operation of the GSBC program at a number of schools throughout our business footprint which are identified as disadvantaged (high population of Aboriginal, financially and socially disadvantaged students). Healthy breakfasts will be provided by trained volunteers at these schools. In addition, volunteers will work with the children to improve their nutritional knowledge and concurrently develop life and social skills.
